Carter Family Band-Lab (1-3) - Come to sing, strum, take solos, or harmonize. We will get together a repetoire of some better and lesser known Carter Family songs, then arrange them for the instruments we have. Guitars, banjos, mandolins, autoharps, dobros, and basses are all welcome.
Your Friend, the Flatpick (2) - Learn how to use a flatpick to accompany yourself and others. We will cover the basics as well as some rhythms, techniques, and bass-runs that will enable you to create an interesting and varied back-up for folk, country, cajun, bluegrass, and fiddle tunes.

Uke Fun for Everyone (1-4) - Special Section - We will start with the basic chord forms and simple right-hand rhythms and play a lot, from the plink-a-plink-a trance of a fiddle tune to the gentle plink-plink-a-plink of Ukulele Lady. I will bring a collection of ukes and banjo-ukes but you can bring your own.
Flatpick Backup for Fiddle Tunes (2-3) - Hang on to your flatpick and learn the art of backing up a real live fiddler, from the basic boom-chuck rhythm to alternating bass notes, bass runs, slides, pull-offs, and right-hand rhythmic tricks. We will play tunes in G, A, C, and D.

Play the Blues I (2) - This is an introduction to blues guitar playing including rhythm, chords, pick playing, finger style, etc. Only basic guitar skills are required. Expect a lot of in-class playing. Handouts and a cassette tape of examples for copying will be provided.
Play the Blues II (3-4) - This is a combined comprehensive guitar class including pick playing, finger style, rhythm & soloing, chords, Travis style, backup playing, etc. There will be a cassette tape of examples available for copying along with handouts for in-class playing.

Traditional Hawaiian Guitar (2-3) - Special Section - Learn to play Hawaiian-style slide guitar as it was played in the early days. We will work on basic tunes, focusing on single-string runs, double-string slants, shots, tricks, & the ubiquitous turn-arounds that characterize this beautiful music.
Hot Club Rhythm (3-4) - This is rhythm guitar as Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club of France played it. Our emphasis is on accompaniment, using Djangoesque "shots" and turnarounds, and right-hand techniques to maximize smoothness and volume.

Advanced theory (3-4) - This is a theory class for those students who have already studied the CAGED method and are ready to move on. Students must know the scales, arpeggios, and chords in at least the first three patterns. We will go from there and get beyond the basics.
Fine Tuning the Backup (3-4) - Bring your own ensemble (BYOE)--Duos, trios, or more, with a song ready to play. This class will focus on how the instrumentalists accompany the vocalists and each other. We will look at the subtleties of group dynamics, tone, groove, and attitude.

Jazz and Swing Vocal Harmony (3-4) - Are you looking for new challenges in harmony singing? Experience joy along with a sense of accomplishment in learning three-, four-, and five-part arrangements that feature luscious chords and moving parts full of vocal intrigue. Music reading is helpful.
A Practical Guide to Jazz Improvisation (4) - Learn the fundamental skills that are indispensible for creative, spontaneous playing over chord changes. We will also listen to examples of classic solos and discuss what it is that makes them so cool.

Concertina (2-3) - Special Section - This class will teach, through a concertina tablature designed by Louis Killen, how to accompany four songs and one tune from his repertoire. This is not a class for rank beginners; some facility on the instrument is required but not sight reading.
Sailor Ballads and Worksongs (1-4) - Learn a variety of ballads and chanteys sung by 19th century sailors and the how, why, and where they were used. Bring a tape recorder. Your main instrument will be your voice, but any old voice will do. After all, these sailors were no opera singers or even performers!

Beginning guitar (1) - We will learn a handful of basic chords and use them to accompany ourselves singing... by the end of the week. We will also develop specific practice routines for becoming better guitarists.
Fingerstyle 101 (2) - We will develop some basic right-hand moves and use them to accompany ourselves singing. We will adapt these moves to a variety of styles and tempos. We will learn one easy-but-cool Nashville-style solo.

Stylish Songwriting (2-3) - Do you feel trapped in one style of songwriting? Learn how to write pop, rock, blues, folk, country, and jazz tunes that sound authentic by analyzing the components of melody, harmony, groove, and lyric as they uniquely apply to each genre.
Tricky Licks, Picky Tricks, & Licky Picks (3) - Learn to "fancy-up" your fingerpicking, turning predictable into exciting. Based on the standard alternating-bass fingerpicking pattern, we will learn chord substitutions, bass runs, licks, and new picks and then combine them into beautiful and fun accompaniment patterns.

Clawhammer Banjo (2-4) - Special Section - We will explore various facets of the clawhammer art from proper right hand technique to Keith-like up-the-neck fingering forms as well as drop and double thumbing, off-string hammer-ons and pull-offs, backup, triplets and ornaments, syncopation, the "arpeggio" technique, and clawhammer rolls.
Celtic Tunes for the Fingerstyle Guitarist (3-4) - Learn to play fingerstyle versions of reels, jigs, hornpipes, marches, slow airs and strathspeys (strath-SPAYS) from Scotland, Ireland, Cape Breton, and other Celtic regions. We will cover phrasing, harmonization, and some specialized techniques.

Human Jazz (1-4) - Is this art or recreation? Human jazz is simple improvisation with the body and voice, our original instruments. Discover whole new worlds of play that exist between singing, acting, and dancing. We will explore global singing styles, rhythmic behavior, morphing music with the body, and carving music with our bare hands. (Offered twice this session.)

· Linda Waterfall (Seattle, WA)

Sing for Joy (1-4) - Do you love to sing? This class is about finding ways to enjoy singing--to make it playful, expressive and meaningful, using rhythm, melody, breath--and, primarily, the mind. Performance and delivery will be involved, but as part of a larger picture. There will be lots of participation.
Music Theory Made Manifest: "It's Not As Hard As All That" (2-3) - Complex chords, modes, modulations, and chord functions--we will study them and discover how to have fun with them. Hands-on activity will help us explore how to decipher charts, construct chords, and arrange and compose music.

· Sean Williams (Olympia, WA)

Sundanese Gamelan (1-4) - Gamelan includes bronze gongs, xylophones, and drums. We will use an easy system to learn a handful of pieces, and we will explore the music's rich cultural background. Come experience the low-stress fun of ensemble playing in a different context!
Old-style Irish Singing (2-3) - Gaelic songs are a rich and accessible addition to any singer's repertoire. Using texts, phonetic transcriptions, and translations, we will transcend the language barrier. These songs come from the teaching of Connemara legend Joe Heaney, but they will be yours when you leave.

Intro to Swing Guitar (3) - This is a class for those who love the music of the 30s and 40s. Movable four-voice chords in five basic qualities provide the keys to this treasure trove of tunes. The step-by-step approach will have you jamming in no time!
Swing Comping (3-4) - Explore new ground with passing chords, chord substitutions, minimalizing, and shifting key centers. Simplify and complicate all at the same time in the same tune!
